About This Program

The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program offers a unique five-year experience delivering comprehensive clinical training with an academic focus. Residents rotate with 28 full-time, fellowship-trained faculty covering all orthopaedic disciplines, exposing them to the latest in state-of-the-art technology and procedures.

Training takes place at several institutions, including University Hospital, UAB Highlands, Children’s of Alabama, Veterans’ Administration Hospital, and American Sports Medicine Institute.

UAB’s University Hospital is the region’s largest level-one trauma center with a catchment area spanning five states. This large referral base ensures comprehensive exposure to a variety of musculoskeletal trauma.

Children’s Hospital of Alabama is the only state-verified pediatric level-one trauma center in Alabama. Residents rotating through Children’s Hospital have abundant exposure to both pediatric orthopaedics and pediatric trauma.

Provided with the confidence to succeed, graduates of the UAB Orthopaedic Residency Program often place into top tier fellowships across the nation.
