About This Program

The University of Pennsylvania Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Residency Program is academically rigorous and one of the preeminent training programs nationwide, particularly for those interested in an academic career. The program offers a combined AP/CP, AP only, CP only, combined AP/Neuropathology, and a Physician-Scientist Pathway for its trainees, with numerous opportunities for research and excellent mentoring faculty for those wishing to pursue a research career. The Department itself is consistently ranked in the Top 3 in NIH research funding. These strengths – along with a Center for Personalized Diagnostics focusing on molecular and genomic pathology in support of precision medicine and computational diagnostics, its clinical services and research in Apheresis and Cellular Therapeutics, the Penn-developed personalized cancer immunotherapy, and an innovative Leadership Program – provide residents with state-of-the-art clinical, scientific and translational research opportunities. Approximately eight first-year positions are offered annually.
