About This Program
Since its founding in 1962, the UCI Department of Urology has been committed to outstanding clinical training in an innovative and vibrant academic environment. In 2019, we received ACGME approval for a complement increase from 2 to 3 trainees per year. Ours is a 1+4 year format, with rotations at the main academic site at UCI and 3 other sites including a VA and dedicated Pediatric Hospital. Our program emphasizes holistic patient care and clinical skills accompanied by the principles of bioethics, compassionate care, and cultural sensitivity to diverse patient populations. In addition, we educate our trainees in the broader societal, legal, and ethical issues that are so important in practicing medicine today. A well-balanced focus on academic urology by way of encouraging clinical and basic research, publications, and presentations provides the graduating residents with the necessary prerequisites for entering specialized fellowships should they wish to pursue an academic career.
