Where You'll Spend Your Time
About This Program
Anesthesiology at New York Medical College and Westchester Medical Center dates to 1904; it might have been the first Department of Anesthesia in the US. The Residency Program was accredited in 1969; Dr. Peter Panzica is the 6th Chair to lead its educational and clinical missions.
WMC, the Hudson Valley’s only teaching, and referral/transfer Level 1 Trauma and Burn Center comprehensively cares for a diverse, large adult and pediatric population.
The Residency graduates are outstanding clinicians; over half continue sub-specialty training.
The majority have peer-reviewed publications; national meeting participation is universal.
Protected didactic time (5 hours per week) includes monthly simulations. A Patient Safety rotation is mandatory; seven elective rotations cap clinical training. Learning resources are plentiful.
Life/work balance matters. Workdays end at 5 PM. Residents take 4 calls per month. Juniors start to call at noon and Seniors, at 4:30 PM, learning OR caseload management and elements of supervision as Team Captains.
